B1 Ride Arnside - Paul Armitage
A hardy five set off from the cobbles in light drizzle, Karen (RC), Jane, Martin, Trevor and your scribe Paul.
We anticipated heavier rain and were not disappointed. Not long after Dolphinholme, Zeus the bringer of rain decided a drizzle was not cooling enough, we needed heavier stuff to regulate our body temperatures as we burnt up the calories and he delivered. By Quernmore cross roads a jacket on stop was required. Leaky skin Martin, not happy riding in the rain told us that if conditions worsened, he’d leave at Woody’s café by the Crook O’ Lune to pursue a drier activity. This angered Zeus and he let more water fall from the sky. True to his word Martin left us at Woody’s. This left an intrepid four to battle the king of the gods all the way to Arnside.
Weather aside, spirits remained high, the lanes and fields were no less beautiful and the conversation and social intercourse no less entertaining – exemplified by the graphic lesson Karen gave Jane on how to relive oneself of nasal mucus whilst on the go during a brief stop at Yealand Redmayne. Lesson over and breathing easily we arrived at Arnside in double quick time. Karen took an executive decision wrt a route change and then we were off again towards Carnforth and lunch at the Brief Encounters Team Rooms. Closed……the visit all too brief, Karen rescued a deteriorating situation by suggesting lunch in Booths cafe. Jane, the female Robin Hood stole and then shared an extra slice of flap jack – claiming innocence – nicely done.
Fed and watered, up the small rise out of Carnforth, Karen set a good pace to get us home well in time for final score on the TV. Jane snuck off at Glasson and Karen somewhere between there and the Patent Arms. Trevor and I completed the distance for the Team.
It seems to me, whatever the weather it’s always good sport with good folk.
