B2 Ride Slaidburn 62 miles - Phil Durrigan
A party of ten made up the B2 group as we headed out on a cold-ish, grey-ish day towards the Lune Valley. Just as we were warming up Karen suffered a puncture and the ensuing complications left us feeling slightly chilly. Dave H. left us at Caton due to another commitment and we made our way to Wray from where the climbing began. We paused at the base of Tatham Fell to take in the terrific views of Ingleborough and Whernside before tackling the long haul up to the Cross of Greet. As we climbed we were greeted by a cavalcade of Aston Martin cars of various vintages descending the fell (I lost count after two dozen). In view of the prevailing breeze it proved too chilly to hang around as we crested the top so a decision was taken to forego the usual photo opportunity at the "Cross" and re-group at the cafe stop at Slaidburn. Here Simon left us as time was pressing and so a reduced group of eight made the return journey. From the stiff climb out of Slaidburn we passed through Dunsop Bridge, Whitewell and Chipping without incident and arrived back at base feeling slightly tired but with a sense of achievement. This is a tough but satisfying route and thanks to Dave H, Simon, Karen, Paula, Dave C, John, Bill and Ian for their company and especially to Shane for a sterling job as rear gunner. A great day out!
