C Ride to Beacon fell by Helen Hayes
Saturday, 8th April turned out to be a record-breaking day. First, the weather was glorious with clear blue skies by mid-morning and the temperature peaking at 19 degrees by mid-afternoon. Secondly, a possible record-breaking twenty-two C riders turned up on the cobbles for the undulating scenic ride to Beacon Fell. At the Kenlis Arms, the ride leader (Helen Hayes) took heed of good advice from experienced GCC leaders to split into three groups based on speed (or personal choice of pace for the day). Bill offered to take the second group and Pip the third. All re-grouped at 'The Green Man' in Inglewhite where some riders decided to move groups. A short stop in Goosnargh village for re-fuelling before the long, steady climb to Beacon Fell Cafe. Being able to enjoy refreshments outside in the warm Spring weather was appreciated by all and it was here that we bid farewell to two returnees from last year (Ruth & Gary).
The return journey started with a taxing climb to the top of Blacksticks where all stopped to admire the panoramic view, watch the gliders or, in many cases, grab a rest. After that, it was fairly downhill all the way through Bleasdale to Garstang. There was some short discussion along the way about doing Delph Lane but thankfully, it soon evaporated. All in all, a very enjoyable day enhanced by the weather, birdsong, spring flowers and the usual banter.
